Project Partners

The Nitrogen and Irrigation Initiative is a unique partnership formed to address critical needs in California agriculture, water, and resource management.

Fertilizer Research and Education Program, California Department of Food and Agriculture

The Fertilizer Research and Education Program (FREP) funds and facilitates research to advance the environmentally safe and agronomically sound use and handling of fertilizing materials. FREP serves growers, agricultural supply and service professionals, extension personnel, public agencies, consultants, and other interested parties.

California Institute for Water Resources, University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources

The mission of the California Institute for Water Resources is to integrate California's research, extension, and education programs to develop research-based solutions to water resource challenges. We do this by facilitating collaborative research and outreach on water issues across California's academic institutions and with international, federal, state, regional, nonprofit, and campus communities. CIWR focuses on:

  • Connecting water resource knowledge and expertise from California's academic institutions with a broad range of communities
  • Developing relevant and timely research-based information on water issues to inform decision-making
  • Communicating research outcomes using targeted, innovative approaches
  • Coordinating resources across California's academic institutions to develop research-based solutions

The Institute is the California hub for the national network of water research institutes supported by the federal Water Resources Research Act of 1964.

University of California Cooperative Extension

The NII includes UC Cooperative Extension Advisors and Staff Research Associates in 12 counties, including Tulare, Kings, Kern, Fresno, Merced, Stanislaus, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey.

Kearney Research and Extension Center, University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources

Since its official dedication in 1965 KARE has achieved international acclaim for leadership in the development of new fruit, nut, and grape varieties, innovative cultural and irrigation practices, pest and disease management techniques, and post-harvest biology. In addition, KARE plays a leadership role in maintaining the quality of California's rural environment, with programs in air and water quality, and mosquito management.

Center for Environmental Policy and Behavior, University of California, Davis

The mission of the Center for Environmental Policy and Behavior (CEPB) is scientific analysis of the interactions among policy institutions, human behavior, and political decisions in the context of environmental and natural resource conflicts. Through developing and testing theoretical models from social science, CEPB seeks to derive practical lessons that can be used to improve environmental policy.

Funding

The project is supported through grants from the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), including a Specialty Crops Block Grant, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Conservation Innovation Grant, and grant funding from the Fertilizer Research and Education Program.
